My art journey started in a small town right outside Detroit, in a church basement, on a preschool easel that had never been used before. Although I remember the brightly colored plastic and the thin paper that curled when touched with paint, I have a little to no memory of the content of my preschool artwork. However my mom would call me a prodigy, because what other 3 year old child knows to draw fingers on her stick figure? —even if it was only three. The years passed and gradually my figure drawings did finally get all five fingers, and became more accurate as a whole.
I studied art at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. There I learned to work with a vast number of mediums and ideas to shape my practice into what it is today. The world has become so urbanized and technology focused that we have forgotten the roots of our existence and the importance of connection with the natural world and with each other. I choose to combine my passion for creating, with the most important pieces of my humanity which stems from the very earth that surrounds us.
I find comfort in making art about nature, a place that is both my sanctuary and my role model. My hope is that viewers find compassion, comfort, and curiosity within my work and feel inspired to learn and create change.
